Joseph A. Schumacher VFW Post 1597

VFW Post 1597 was founded by Thomas W. Roberts on October 4, 1928 and was chartered with twenty-eight members. He named the VFW Post 1597 after Joseph Albert Schumacher. Schumacher enlisted in the Army at the age of 17, and sailed to France on August 17, 1917, as a member of 5th Company, 1st Trench Mortar Battery, 1st Infantry Division. On February 26, 1918, he was mortally gassed by the enemy just 10 days short of his 19th birthday. He was interred in France, but in 1923, at his family’s insistence, his body was returned to the U.S. for burial in the Bristol Cemetery in Croydon, Pennsylvania, where today he lies beside his parents.

The Auxiliary to Joseph A. Schumacher VFW Post 1597 was founded by Madeline Keene along with twelve other women.  These women were granted a charter on November 24, 1928. The Joseph A. Schumacher VFW Post 1597 and the Auxiliary are the oldest in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
